After WWII, Mercedes was able to salvage enough tooling to resume production of its W136 line of vehicles and they became the company's top selling models. In 1949 they built on the success of the 170V and introduced the 170S (special) model. The 170S was longer, wider and better appointed than the 170V and it received a revised M136 engine, now good for 52hp and a top speed of 122 km/h.
